LEGO Doctor Who 6-8 is the third in a fictional series of video games based upon the increasingly popular BBC television series, Doctor Who. It follows on from LEGO Doctor Who 1-3: the video game and LEGO Doctor Who 4-5: the video game, with all Doctors playable in the game, regenerating into the next variation when killed during Free Play. This video game focuses upon Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, and even John Hurt's Doctors - these being the Sixth, Seventh, Eighth and War Doctors, respectively. Many abilities are carried over from previous games, such as the Sonic Screwdriver ability. Meanwhile, many new abilities are introduced, such as Gliding (e.g. the Sixth and Seventh Doctors, using their umbrellas).

A new type of level, the TARDIS Transporter level, is also introduced, in which two characters must work together to build a blue target, while another character (usually the Doctor) completes simple mini-tasks aboard the TARDIS (e.g. finding and repairing pieces of technology). Once both tasks have been achieved, the TARDIS will materialise on the blue target, and the level will continue.

Gallifrey

Unlike previous games, the main HUB is not the TARDIS; instead, it is the Gallifrey Capitol, during the Time War. In the Security Area, however, there are six TARDISes - one for each of the six levels. They materialise whenever a new level is unlocked, and upon entering, level chapters can be accessed from the console. The player can also explore the Capitol. New characters can be purchased in the Panopticon. Cutscenes can be viewed by accessing the Matrix in the Archives. By travelling through the War Rooms to the Time Vaults, extras can be purchased. By going to the High Council Room, minikits can be viewed. Here, the player can also teleport out into the Dalek-ridden Death Zone, where any character can be played as, and bonus levels can be found in hidden locations.

The Doctor floats back into the wreckage of the Cyber ship, and finds what is left of the teleporter. He repairs it, and causes it to attach once more to the alien spaceships, and the TARDIS. In its new, weakened state, the teleporter cannot pull the spaceships back in; subsequently, the spaceships, floating in different directions, are able to tear the Cyber ship apart.
